Wisconsin Hot Rod Radio's Modelers Corner weekly segment.

These are few Christmas recommendations from Master Model Builders Al and Kathy Stout.

You can hear Al's broadcast where he shares his expertise in model building - every week on Wisconsin Hot Rod Radio.

Excerpts from the radio show - aired December 3rd:

A universal Xacto hobby knife #3201 about $3.50 can be bought at the hobby shop, craft store and local hardware store. Don’t forget to get the #11 blades around $2.50 for the knife.

Sprue cutters run upward from $13.00 for cutting parts off the trees.  For the hobby knife and sprue cutters, we usually buy the smaller size because of the parts the hobbyist is working with.

Sand paper of all different grits and prices are available at the hobby shop and also your local hardware stores.

Different widths of Tape in various prices by Tamiya Co. can be found at the hobby stores.

When it comes to Glue, I know my husbands’ favorite is Zap-A-Gap for plastic in the green label.  It comes in a 0.05oz bottle for under $5.00.  Other glues to use are super glue and super glue gel.  To prolong their shelf life, we keep these in the refrigerator when not in use.  Don’t forget to buy the kicker or acceleratant for the super glue.  This helps dry the glue faster when time is of the essence.

Next he’ll need Paint brushes.  Invest in one good expensive very fine tip for the small places he will be painting.  Then a couple of other size brushes.  Testors brushes run $1.09-$2.09, while Model Master brushes are $5.49-$8.79.  You can also check out brushes at the craft stores.

Paint is Hubby’s final step in model building.  Between bottled and spray can, brands very in price between enamel and lacquer from $4.39-$5.59.  There are bottles of Testors enamel and spray, Model Master bottles and spray both in enamel and lacquer.  And then Tamiya is synthetic lacquer spray.  Have fun and pick out a couple colors you think he could use.  Also, a  black spray can and a clear coat spray can always be used by the modeler.
If your husband is a first time modeler, there are Paint Sets such as Testors enamel kits $8.00-$15.00 & Acrylic pot sets $8.00-$10.00 and a complete set by Testors Model Finishing Set featuring 12 bottles of paint colors, glue, brush & hobby knife for around $35.00.

Now that his model is finished, buy either a Single acrylic case or a Large multi-car case to put the model in for display.  Prices for single run $8.50-$12.00.  Big Multi cases run $70.00- $110.00.

Wives---If you are at a loss for what supplies to buy-turn to Magazines; Model Cars $5.50 or Scale Auto for $5.95.

If all else fails get that Gift Certificate from your local Hobby Shop.  The Hobbyist can always find something they want to buy from kits to supplies.  Hope this helps the gift giving dilemma.
